The sexual behaviour in animals is variable not among the members of the same species or within different species. Different types of mating systems have been discovered by the researchers in the animals. The study of animal sexual behaviour is very interesting and is one of the hot topic in which the scientist are indulged with dedication. It is clear that only few animals participate in the sex play like humans. About 1,500 species of animals are believed to be homosexual. The sociobiology and behavioural ecology are the two branches of science which deal with the ways in which the animal societies are oriented towards the sexual behaviour. The mating system gives an idea about the circumstances and clue about the fact that which male with mate with which female.

The first mating system is monogamy where one male and one female together form the sexual relationship or sexual bond which remains throughout their life. Zoologists and socio-biologists have recommended that the pair formation in the monogamous animals is not always sexually exclusive. Sexual activities have been found to be exchanged with extra-sex partners as seen in the swans. Sometimes the exclusive partner is not selected and the offspring is produced through these extra-sex partners. Social, sexual and genetic monogamy can occur in different combinations. About 90% of the birds are socially monogamous and 15% of the primates are monogamous. Social monogamy has also been observed in the fishes, reptiles and insects. Only 3% of the mammalian species are monogamous. Another type of the mating system is polygamy. In polygamy a male forms exclusive sexual relationship with more than many females. Polygamy is of three types. Polygyny is the phenomenon where the individual of one gender mates with one or more individuals of the same species. Harems are famous for polygyny. Another type of polygyny is polygynandry where both males and females can mate with more than one or more partners. Other type of mating system is promiscuity. Here in promiscuity any individual of either gender can mate with more than one individual within the social group. Promiscuity is very common among the chimpanzees and bonobos.

Animals are generally seasonal breeders which means they mate only during certain periods of year. Breeding season is responsible for bringing a number of changes in the individual like changes in behaviour, development of the territorial behaviour. Some animals mate annually and some mate biannually. During the breeding season the females are physically receptive and are in estrous. The common term used for the receptive female is that the female is in heat. It is generally believed that the animals undergo sexual activity just for the continuance of the species and not for pleasure as found in humans, pigs, cats and dolphins.

Common Sexual Activities Shown by Animals

Autoeroticism (Masturbation)

Masturbation is very common among the animals including both male and females members of species and they masturbate when partners are available in order to show that they are ready to mate. Masturbation has been commonly observed in horses where they rub the penis with any hard material, also the kangaroo is seen masturbating the penis with the front paws. Bruce Bagemihl in his book Biological Exuberance in 1999 has concluded that autoeroticism is common among both male and female partners. A number of techniques are used by the animals for the genital stimulation like using hands, paws, rubbing of the nipples, licking or sucking of its own penis by the male, stimulation of the penis by rubbing it against the belly, stimulation of the genitalia is also done by using some inanimate objects and this is very common among the cetaceans.

Oral Sex

Animals of many species are known to indulge in the autofellatio and oral sex. Although this behaviour of animals confuses humans as it is a completely different sexual behaviour adopted by animals. Oral sex has been commonly observed in the hyenas, goats, primates, bats and sheep.

Homosexual Behaviour

Homosexual behaviour has been observed in a number of animal species like marine birds, mammals, monkeys and great apes. Homosexual behaviour has been observed in 1,500 species of animals and is well documented in 500 species. Janet Mann a professor of Georgetown University has observed homosexual behaviour in the dolphins. Homosexual behaviour has been noticed in the male penguin couples who mate throughout their lives and build nests together use a stone as a surrogate egg in nesting and brooding. The Central Zoo Park in the United States conducted an experiment in 2004 on the male couple of penguins. They replaced one male couple’s surrogate egg with a fertilized egg and noticed that the male couple raised that young one as their own offspring when it hatched. Mounting of one female by other female is a common activity among cattle. Homosexual behaviour has been observed in male sheep aand is known to be affected by both brain and the hormones.

Cross Species Sex

Animals have been observed to mate with the members of other species as observed in case of wild moose which attempts to mate with the horses. Hybrids can result by mating between the animals of closely related species but the offspring may not always be fertile. For example mule which is the hybrid of horse and donkey is sterile but in case of liger which is a hybrid of lion and tiger have fertile females and sterile males.

Prostitution and Sexual Fetishes

In many species of penguins the females although committed to a male may exchange sexual favours with strange males just in order to get pebbles for construction of their nests. Many animals have been observed to use inanimate objects for sexualizing themselves. This behaviour resembles the Pavlovian conditioning.

Coercive Sex

In a number of species males are seen to court with the females forcefully. This raping behaviour has been very well documented in the arachnids where the females are seen to eat the males when not tricked with food or tied with threads during the process of courtship. In many herbivorous species where there are differences in the size of male and female partners the males are often seen to dominate the females and court with them with sheer force. In many bird species combined sexual intercourse has been observed which occurs with violence and is very common in the ducks and geese.

Sex between Adults and Juveniles

Moles of certain species impregnate young females which is a part of their normal reproductive physiology. It is not known that whether the courtship is performed with force or not.

Sexual Cannibalism

Sexual cannibalism has been well documented in the arachnids, insects and amphipods where the female kills or consumes the male during or after the act of copulation.

Necrophilia

Necrophilia is a process where an animal tries to court with a dead animal. Kees Moeliker of the Rotterdam Natural History Museum, Netherlands has observed necrophilia in duck trying to copulate with the dead duck. Moeliker has received Nobel Prize for this research in biology awarded for humorous research. Such behaviour has also been noticed in the cane toads.

Study of the sexual behaviour of animals provides many clues about the human sexual behaviour. Sexual behaviour in animals is very interesting and many facts are still unexplored and require attention.
